Sights of Bulgaria

Bulgaria is not only the sea and the sun, it is history and culture, picturesque cities and museums, ancient monasteries and modern architecture.

Sofia. All the sights of the capital are concentrated in the city center. Here is the pointed minaret of the Banya-Bashi mosque, and the Mineral bathhouse with colorful tiles on the walls, the rotunda of Sveti Georgi – part of the church built in the 2nd-3rd centuries, the Church of St. Sophia, which gave the name to the city, and St. Light (Holy Resurrection). On the largest shopping street – Vitosha Boulevard – the Theological Academy, a historical museum that stores objects of the famous Panagyur gold treasure of the 4th and 3rd centuries. BC. (golden bowls painted on mythological subjects). The church of St. Nicholas, built in memory of the fallen Russian soldiers during the Russian-Turkish war, is very beautiful. The golden domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, also erected in memory of the Russian warrior who fell in the battles for the freedom of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke, are visible from afar. This is a beautiful cathedral of Sofia.

Varna – one of the oldest cities in Europe, leading its annals from the VI century. BC, today is an important industrial and cultural center of Bulgaria. Despite the dynamic development of the economy, the construction of modern office buildings, Varna is fraught with ancient history, which to this day surprises specialists. It was during the excavations of the Varna necropolis that a golden treasure was found that belonged to an unknown ancient people who lived here long before the Thracians.

Pleven is also a city of history. The historical museum “Liberation of Pleven in 1877” is located in the same house where Emperor Alexander II met with the defeated Osman Pasha. And the southern hill, on which fierce battles were fought, turned into the Skobelevsky Park Museum. At the top of the hill, towering above the city, another museum was created – a panorama of the Pleven Epic. Today Pleven is a beautiful crowded city, the central streets of which are declared pedestrian zones.

In Plovdiv, ancient fragments of the amphitheater of Philip II of Macedon, which conquered the city in 342, a basilica, a term and a city forum, are still preserved. Nowadays, the theater has been restored, it hosts various performances. The interest of tourists is the oldest clock tower in Europe, mosques of the times of Turkish rule “Imaret” and “Dzhumaya”. The medieval streets of Old Plovdiv attract many artists who like the cozy atmosphere of these places. More than 200 buildings of the Old City are declared historical monuments. Veliko Tarnovo, the ancient capital of the Bulgarian kingdom is a universal admiration. The picturesque city, located on high hills, once competing with Byzantine Constantinople, and becoming the center of the Bulgarian Renaissance, surprises tourists with its architecture and ancient monuments. The best creations of the outstanding Tarnovsky self-taught master Kolya Finchev decorate the city. Preserved examples of brilliant architecture – the Church of the Forty Holy Martyrs and the Holy Virgin, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul.

One of the most famous sights of Burgas is a marine park with monuments and sculptures, stretching for 7 kilometers. The historical and natural science museums are interesting, as well as the ancient Burgshas baths, built next to the healing mineral springs in the time of the Romans.
